Summer is the season for sandwiches, especially since sammies are the perfect pack-and-go meal for warm weather activities like pool days, camping trips and beach picnics. And they’re not just easy—sandwiches are a fantastic way to up your fiber intake or fuel up with protein, and they can please anyone, from vegetarians to fans of a great tuna salad sammie.
We aren’t the only ones who sing the praises of a really good sandwich. Speed star Sandra Bullock dished on her favorite sandwich back in 2022 during an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and her go-to sammie is a true classic. During Colbert’s The Colbert Questionert (pronounced “questionnaire”) segment, the late-night host presented Bullock with an important question: What is the best sandwich?
Bullock’s response? A simple-but-delicious BLT, short for bacon, lettuce and tomato. A straight-forward order, yes, but Bullock has some clear preferences for her favorite sandwich. Turns out, she just likes a single layer of tomato in her BLT. “I’d rather have more B and L,” she said, adding that “the T is for the tang.”
However, if you’d rather place no limits on the tomato, you’ll enjoy more than just their juicy flavor. Tomatoes pack lots of health benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease, improved skin health and help with digestion, thanks to their fiber content. (You could also up the fiber content in this sandwich by using slices of a higher-fiber bread, like 100% whole wheat.) Thankfully, leafy romaine lettuce has its perks, too, including providing antioxidants, which offer plenty of benefits when it comes to free radicals.
Don’t Miss
But one of the greatest things about a good, old-fashioned BLT is its versatility. Turkey can be added to a BLT to up the protein content in sandwiches or wraps, and it’s easy to add some healthy fat to the classic sandwich by changing it to a BLAT: bacon, lettuce, avocado and tomato. Turkey bacon can also be subbed into a BLT in place of regular bacon, a swap that’ll reduce your saturated fat intake just a bit.
And, if you’re Bullock’s opposite and can’t get enough tomato on your BLT, there are plenty of other tomato sandwiches worth trying, too. We love the combo of cucumber, tomato and herbaceous cream cheese between two slices of bread, as well as a summery caprese sandwich with fresh basil, tomato and mozzarella cheese.
Another tomato-based sandwich worth adding to your summer recipe list? Bullock’s Practical Magic co-star Nicole Kidman also dished about sammies with Colbert, sharing her love of the tomato-and-cheese toastie. What’s a toastie? The sandwich is a British term that describes a sandwich similar to a grilled cheese or panini. If a toastie with tomato isn’t your thing, there’s always a spinach-and-artichoke dip grilled cheese or kale and gruyere panini to try.
Whatever sandwich you’re noshing on this summer, pair it with something delicious, whether it’s a simple cucumber salad or a cheery glass of Grapefruit Soda. No matter what sandwich you choose, summer’s dreamy produce is bound to take the flavor up a notch.
