HURLEY, Wis. (WJFW) – Cary Road Park is a place in Hurley where people usually go to get a quick exercise but now their experience will be a bit different.
“This fitness court came to us kind of by accident we received an email and responded to it started looking to it and decided that it was a great thing for our community,” said Melissa DeCarlo a office manager for the Iron County Health Department.
DeCarlo says it usually a little harder to workout in the winter due to the massive amount of snow, but it can happen.
“A lot of these courts are opened up in areas that are accessible 365 days of the year, said DeCarlo. “We said do you know where we are at, and they explained to us that one of the courts are also in Buffalo that the people there actually shovel it off after every snowstorm to keep it open and they use it as their warm up.”
Staying active is crucial but difficult during winter months. The fitness court is free to use and features various workouts that can be scanned through a QR code.
“Where it’s located its at the tail end community trail we have a very outdoorsy community they like snowshoeing, skiing, hiking, biking, running,” said DeCarlo. “When it comes to this is kind of the end of the trail for them so they come down here it’s a one mile loop do there workout jump on their bike and heading back to their towns.”
The new court has been in the works since the beginning of the year and was made possible by the American Rescue Plan Act. DeCarlo is challenging everyone to take advantage of what they now have for the community.
“It’s a safe place, it’s a free place and we are just hoping that our community uses this, for a healthier future,” said DeCarlo.
Cary Road Park is located on located on the east side of Carey Road. The outdoor fitness course is for people ages 14 and up.
