Reaching out to the youth: Fitness center in Danville purchased

DANVILLE — With a desire to give young people something constructive to do, Edward J. Butler and the Rev. Frank J. McCullough of the Three Kings of Peace will reopen the Roselawn Fitness Center.

“By all means we want to do it to help the kids,” Butler said. “That’s our ultimate goal to help the kids, redirect their mindset, their energy.”

Located in a three-story former school, the center had been operated since 1989 by Sharron and Chip Runyan until they retired in late 2022.

Butler said the center will offer many of the same activities as before. A day care will be opened on the south side of the facility.

He said he and McCullough would operate the center and hire individuals to run it when they are not there to supervise the activities.

“We will offer weight lifting, some exercise machines, treadmill, a basketball program, yoga,” Butler said.

There will also be a shower room and locker room. The center will also be available for rental.

Butler said there is a major need for such facilities among the young people.

“It’s needed tremendously more than ever,” he said. “The kids’ mindset is not set on being positive.

“That’s what we want to do, direct their minds on a positive attitude and stuff like that.”

Open house set

An open house to reintroduce the fitness center to the community will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.

The Runyans and the new owners will be present. All are welcome to attend and tour the center.

Butler said The Three Kings of Peace plan to keep memberships affordable and are applying for grants and seeking donors to help defray costs.

The center is located at 302 W. Roselawn St.
