2023 World Diabetes Day at Texas Diabetes Institue

Hear from certified diabetes educators, taste healthy recipes, test your glucose level and much more at this free community event

Diabetes is a silent disease that can affect the entire body. One of the keys to managing complications from the disease is maintaining a healthy diet to help keep blood sugar levels within normal range. We invite the public to learn about nutrition and boosting health naturally from our expert dietitians and certified diabetes educators on World Diabetes Day.

University Health invites the community to a special health fair to recognize World Diabetes Day. The event runs from 9 – 11 a.m. today at the Texas Diabetes Institute, 701 S. Zarzamora. Complimentary parking is available on site. Entry to the event is free but registration is required.

Attendees can participate in a session led by an expert to learn about boosting health naturally. They can also get a glucose screening, talk to the pharmacy team about insulin advances, taste holiday recipes from our dietitians and much more. Participants will learn tips and receive nutritional advice for having a diabetic-friendly holiday meal.

Thanks to our partners at The Gonzaba Foundation for Healthier Communities and RBFCU, some attendees will leave the event with a turkey or a bag of fresh produce. These generous donations will provide families with nutritious components to help complete their holiday meals. Supplies of turkeys and produce bags are limited.

“Nearly 15% of Bexar County residents are living with Type 2 diabetes and many people are not aware that they have it,” said Dr. Alberto Chavez-Velazquez, endocrinologist with University Health. “World Diabetes Day promotes awareness of the prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes in our communities.”

For those living with diabetes, eating a balanced diet is essential. Meals with plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables while limiting added sugar can help blood sugar stay in a normal range. Eating on a schedule while being mindful of portion sizes can also help. Join us at the Texas Diabetes Institute to learn how to put these tips into practice. Small changes can make a big impact.

University Health’s Texas Diabetes Institute treats both adults and children. The comprehensive services help ensure that patients have access to various resources, education and support to manage their health care needs in one location.
