New Delhi: Tuberculosis elimination is one of the major focuses of the healthcare system in India. India has set a target to achieve sustainable development strategies to make India TB-free by 2025. The national strategic plan for 2017 to 2025 sets the target of India reporting not more than 44 new TB cases or 65 total cases per lakh by 2025. However, India accounts for about 27 per cent of the total TB cases worldwide, as per the recently released Global TB Report 2023 by the World Health Organisation (WHO).  Aiming this target India already has several positive strides such as increased access to treatment and more accurate molecular diagnostics.  Despite all these steps taken, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday noted that a balanced diet plays a vital role in strengthening the immune system making it more resilient to infectious diseases such as tuberculosis.

With the commitment to eliminate TB by 2025, five years ahead of the global target of 2030, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said in February that the government spent nearly Rs 3,000 crore in a year for free drugs, testing and nutrition for 25 lakh TB patients in the country. As well 10 lakh TB patients in the country were being adopted by the service-minded population who also distributed nutrition to them each year.
