GREENFIELD — Common Ground Fitness Center is settling into its new space at 369 Federal St. seven months after leaving its High Street location when the property sold.
Co-owners Nadya Beaudoin and Jamie Roberts have reopened their 24/7 members-only gym between Dollar General and Carquest Auto Parts, in the suite formerly occupied by the New 2 You furniture store. The fitness center, which once stood next to Art’s Tire before landlord James LaFleur sold the property to Town Fair Tire, opened Sept. 13 for one-on-one sessions and to all members on Sept. 30.
“We had our membership base of people who were waiting to get their gym memberships started back up again. We also had personal training clients who had been waiting in the wings to get back into their sessions,” said Beaudoin, who runs the day-to-day operations. Roberts also works as a lieutenant at the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
“We’re starting to see a lot of our members come back because they actually joined other gyms,” she added.
Beaudoin mentioned Common Ground Fitness is seeing many new faces at its new location because the business now offers more services and programs, namely the 90-day Fitness Transformation Challenge.
“You’re assigned a designated fitness coach. It really allows you to really kind of get off that … diet-and-exercise hamster wheel of, you know, trying different things, not really knowing what’s going to be the best program for you,” she explained, adding that people who sign up for the challenge meet with a fitness coach and “deep-dive into what their particular fitness and nutrition and wellness goals are.”
Beaudoin said the multi-tiered program uses state-of-the-art online software.
The two women purchased Common Ground Fitness Center from the previous owners in April 2020 and became the official owners as of June 1, 2020, but were unable to open the doors due to COVID-19 pandemic safety restrictions. They orchestrated outdoor classes at Greenfield High School’s track for a while before eventually moving into the space at 368 High St., where they operated until Jan. 28.
“Right away we started looking,” Beaudoin said. “We looked at a couple different spaces, because when you’re talking about finding space for a gym, it’s not like you can find some office space somewhere. You have to find a nice big, open space with high ceilings.”
She said the landlord at 369 Federal St. added brand-new bathrooms, two showers and a utility room for cleaning supplies ahead of Common Ground Fitness Opening there.
“It’s great the doors are finally open,” Roberts said. “I’m very excited.”
She and Beaudoin have added barbells, rowers and cardio equipment to their arsenal. Beaudoin said they “found a lot of good gems on Facebook Marketplace” and from a closed gym in Ludlow. The gym also has a push sled with an artificial surface resembling a strip of football turf.
The business is not staffed 24/7 — rather, members can gain entry to the building with a key fob or smartphone app. Memberships cost $40 to $50 per month, depending on the classes clients sign up for. Personal training is offered for separate fees.
