Cost keeps most from eating healthier

(WYTV)- We’re always preaching to you to eat healthy food, and you might reply, sure, but it can be a bit pricey.

Look at where you find the fresh fruits and vegetables in your grocery: round the edges of the store and shopping there can be expensive.

It’s much easier to shop in the middle of the store where food may not cost as much.
So why does healthy food seem to cost more? Here’s a report from CNBC: remember your supply chain.

You want fresh?

We have to transport fresh foods quickly if they’re going to have any kind of a shelf life. If you want some fruit that’s out of season, those transport costs can really go up.

Any labor trouble down the line? That will affect how those fruits and vegetables are collected and shipped. On the other hand, food that can sit on the shelf for a long time can do that because they contain preservatives, not always a good thing for your health.

And some of these foods, frozen and otherwise, we can manufacture in bulk, so they’re cheaper and maybe less nutritious.

On a per-calorie basis, junk food is typically less expensive than something packed with nutrients.

The Cleveland Clinic just did a survey last year of a thousand Americans and found 46% of them said the cost of fresh food does keep them from buying it and eating healthier.
