On Forbes Newsroom, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.), who launched an insurgent campaign for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination – said that he is concerned about President Biden’s mental and physical fitness.
Responding to a recent NBC poll that showed 74% of voters either have “major” or “moderate concerns” about Biden’s mental and physical fitness ahead of a potential second term, Phillips said he “of course” shared the sentiment. “There’s a reason, because we’re human beings, that we don’t generally see people in that age group in significant leadership positions.”
The Minnesota Democrat noted that Biden’s age is not the only one that concerns him, as the GOP frontrunner, former President Donald Trump, is nearing his 80s. “This is not just a singular issue with a singular candidate.”
Phillips, a three-term Congressman from Minnesota, has praised the President’s record, stating that Biden has done a “spectacular” job for the country – but his concerns about electability led to his decision to run.
“Joe Biden is going to lose to Donald Trump,” Phillips bluntly tells Forbes. “This is not the time to sit down and shush up and get in line and wait for 2028. The time to serve the country is right now and meet the moment.”
Current polling backs up Phillips’s claims. A recent New York Times/Siena College poll that was conducted before election day 2023 shows Trump trouncing Biden in five swing states: Nevada, Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.
Phillips says that Biden is “the only one, perhaps, that could’ve beaten Donald Trump in 2020” but “now he’s among the only Democrats who I think could lose to Donald Trump.”
