BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — CSAL Elementary hosted Friday Fitness Fest, an event brought to life by Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome, the Baton Rouge Police Department and the Stew Compound gym in Baton Rouge.
Students were able to learn on how to be healthy through workout routines and nutritional informational sessions.
Educator at CSAL, Jalysa Floyd, said students in East Baton Rouge Parish are in need of conversations about how to eat healthy and is excited to help with the Stew Compound gym.
“In this community, you see a lot of underlying conditions like diabetes, obesity, anxiety. It’s important to kind of give that back to our kids so they know in the future how to take care of themselves and how to eat healthy,” Floyd said.
After working out and learning about healthy eating, Jaicom Graham, fourth grade student at CSAL Elementary, said he is encouraged to be healthier for his future self.
“If I keep my body healthy, I’ma stay in shape until the point where I can make, like, do stuff like I can keep myself going and I can have a better life,” Graham said.
Travis Stewart, owner and fitness trainer of the Stew Compound, said events like the fitness fest are important and essential for the future generation.
“I want to start them young to put this fitness and health in them at a young age. So, when they get older, it becomes more of a lifestyle and they’re not intimidated by fitness,” Stewart said.
Stewart also said he hopes to bring more of these events to EBR campuses.
“It’s important to educate the kids so they can know that we are here for them, to help them in whatever way they need,” Stewart said.
