Healthy Foods To Eat In Your 40s: By the age of 40, our body begins to suffer from joint pain, back pain, and the onset of numerous chronic diseases such as arthritis and osteoarthritis. The body’s hormones begin to decline which makes it difficult to sleep, hard to lose weight, gives brain fog, and leads to low libido. Reaching the age of 40 is an important milestone in a man or woman’s health, as it is the right age to take care of a person’s health for future well-being regardless of professional stress like demanding jobs and personal family duties.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr L. Sudarshan Reddy, Sr. Consultant Physician, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad explained how diet is important in your 40s to maintain overall health.

According to Dr Reddy, before 40 the body can take effects of irregular food habits and lifestyle but after it is difficult to cope with wear and tear as the body has slower metabolism, hormonal changes, bone loss, cardiovascular risk and diabetes are concerns too. In your 40s, it is advised to avoid carbohydrates from refined flours and junk foods and to take whole grains oats which aid metabolism.

Avoid consuming fruit juices with sugars and preservatives and encourage yourself to take whole fruits which aid in roughage and digestion and control constipation.
Take plenty of green vegetables which give antioxidants to the body and help in blood circulation. It is also important to cut down on salts and pickles which can cause high blood pressure and in turn lead to cardiovascular events.

Dr Reddy suggests that take low-fat dietary products which are a good source of calcium, as bone loss is more in females, they should take calcium-rich foods to maintain calcium.
It is important to speed up your metabolism above 40 years and to get plenty of sleep, at least 6 hours and eat plenty of metabolism-boosting foods. These include spices, hot peppers, whole grains, broccoli, soups, citrus fruits, and green vegetables. Eat citrus fruits as they have beneficial effects on heart and blood circulation, cut down alcohol intake and drink it in moderation. Along with dietary habits and lifestyle, it is important to exercise regularly to maintain mental and physical well-being.
