Fire burns Plantations clubhouse, home of Dave Marshall Tennis & Fitness center


A fire Jan. 12 burned the Plantations clubhouse causing $275,000 in damage to the building that houses the Dave Marshall Tennis & Fitness center.

Area firefighters responded about 9 p.m. to the fire and found smoke and fire coming from the building, said Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal John Galaska. 

According to a newsletter sent to property owners in the development from property manager SeaScape, eight fire departments responded, including Lewes, Rehoboth, Milton, Georgetown, Bethany Beach, Indian River, Millsboro and Ellendale. Galaska said one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion, and there were no other reported injuries. The newsletter says little is known, but the main clubhouse appears to be a total loss. Galaska said the damage is estimated at $275,000.

“We are thankful to the local volunteer fire departments and fire police who fought the flames for several hours in miserable conditions,” read the notice.

The notice to Plantations owners said none of the Plantations condo buildings were involved in the fire.

Galaska said the fire originated on the interior of the structure; the cause remains under investigation at this time. The structure was not occupied at the, Galaska said, and the structure was not protected by an automatic fire sprinkler system.
