With winter-like weather hitting Canada’s west this week, it’s a good time to hit up your local drytool crag. Thanks to a Squamish climber, the town now has a fun new crag for shoulder season drytooling.
The Fitness Club is found on Debeck’s Hill above town and is assessed by hiking up the biking trails Plural of Nemesis and Pleasure Trail. Once on Pleasure Trail, you’ll be able to take a faint trail to the base of the obvious bluff. The rock seeps throughout the summer and is too chossy to be used as a summer rock crag, which is why Jason Dayman turned it into a drytool zone.
Dayman published a free online guidebook to The Fitness Club here, where he outlines several routes, including Pre Workout Powder D6+ and Drill Sergent D10. To date, there are around 10 routes. Drytool grades equate to mixed M grades, but the routes only follow rock, no ice.
In his mini guide, Dayman said, “Many routes seep extensively over the winter, especially the steepest ones through the central roof. During our coveted arctic outflows, unsupported ice features form along the top. None of the routes have yet to see a true mixed winter ascent, but it is foreseeable that conditions will permit for this in the future. If you are climbing here when ice is present, be aware of your surroundings and continually assess for overhead hazards.”
