A U.S. Army veteran who became a fitness influencer with more than 100,000 Instagram followers has died by suicide, leaving behind a 12-year-old daughter.
Staff Sgt. Michelle Young had served two tours in Afghanistan during her 16-year military career.
Friends of Young posted about her death on Saturday and offered tributes to her.
Two days before her death she posted a video celebrating her daughter’s birthday.
“Happy birthday to the sweetest girl I’ve ever known. She’s a force to be reckoned with, she’s witty, ambitious, kind, compassionate, intelligent, hardworking, hilarious, and selfless,” Young said about her daughter.
Several months earlier she posted about losing her brother to suicide when she was 14 and said she was a crisis trauma support volunteer.
“That day forever changed my life, but it also created a passion for helping others that I don’t think I would have had if I didn’t experience the pain of losing him,” Young said in the video.
A GoFundMe for her daughter has raised more than $34,000.
“Michelle was a beautiful soul, an amazing friend, a single mother, a soldier, and is proof you never know what someone is going through or what demons they may be fighting,” organizer Sarah Maine wrote.
“We will never fill the gaps in our hearts and will always be left with questions why.”
Suicide rates in the military have increased since 2011, according to the Department of Defense. 492 service members died while on active duty in 2022, the most recent year data was available.
Suicide rates are much higher among veterans who have left the military. More than six veterans die by suicide a day, according to the Veterans Administration.
