When establishing a regular fitness routine, one of the first steps is to work out how often to exercise. Too often and you risk overtraining; too sporadic and the lack of consistency means you won’t see results.
Thankfully, Jennifer Aniston’s trainer Dani Coleman has shared her recommended weekly dose. ‘I always tell clients I aim for three to four times a week. Four being a trainer’s dream, while three is a little bit more realistic for people’s schedules,’ the head coach at Pvolve – the fitness method favoured by Jennifer – told E! News.
Here’s how she thinks you should implement habits if you’re building a routine from scratch.
Start small
‘It sounds so cliché and simple, but I’ll choose consistency over intensity any day,’ Coleman advises. ‘I just want you to get into the habit and the practice of adding daily movement into your life. Start small – scale up.’
In fact, Coleman notes that ‘diving headfirst and trying to chew off too much’ is one of people’s biggest mistakes. ‘It’s easy to get motivated and then to lose your steam. So find out what your why is and continue to build towards that long-term. Know that it’s the small daily choices you’re going to make that are going to add up to the big picture.’
Don’t put pressure on yourself
‘Whether you have 30 minutes, have a full tank of energy or are running on empty, listen to your body,’ Coleman reminds us. ‘You don’t have to always show up and be at 100%, and consistency always isn’t going to operate at 100%.
‘There will be days where you say, “I’ve got 50% in the tank and 30 minutes.” And we’re going to make it count and meet your body where it’s at.’
