During Carnival, you can catch the Bionic Babes showing off their new purpose.The Bionic Babes or Dancers of Hope, from the northshore, are a group of breast cancer survivors dancing in parades for health and empowerment. Gina Pausina Cherry found Bionic Babes while battling breast cancer. It all started when she realized her love for dance and carnival can heal others. “We had people coming up to us saying ‘I’m a survivor.’ People coming up to us as we’re marching, ‘thank you so much for what you’re doing.’ They told us stories of loved ones they lost and it will bring tears to my eyes because they would say keep doing what you’re doing,” said Cherry.Survivor Rebecca Lewis says being part of the krewe brings joy back into her life.“A cancer diagnosis is not the end,” she said. “Having this practice and being informed when everything was, it got me out of the house.” The ladies encourage cancer survivors to prioritize fitness and do what brings you hope.“I realized though exercise, staying healthy and staying fit, my journey of cancer, it wasn’t as hard than what most people have explained their journey has been,” said Cherry.Those interested in joining or donating Bionic Babes can visit here.
