The meeting is nothing new to Mint Valley Racquet and Fitness. In 2014, a soccer advocate proposed a number of possible changes for the facility ranging from renovating Mint Valley’s tennis area to constructing a new building to house indoor soccer. Ultimately nothing was done, but any loss of the facilities would have a detrimental effect on high school tennis teams. That concern lingers among proponents of high school sports.

The fitness club currently houses four tennis courts that are shared among three local schools: Mark Morris, R.A. Long and Kelso. R.A. Long head tennis coach Rally Wallace says that even a partial change could significantly impact high school tennis in the region. He says Mint Valley houses virtually the only indoor tennis facility between Vancouver and Olympia.

“If they take the tennis courts away from the high schools, that means our practices and our matches would be in the gymnasium,” Wallace said. “You can’t get any quality practice in a gymnasium.”

He added that there are more difficulties when you factor in tournaments that the schools host. The schools typically host multiple tournaments each year, which can’t be effectively managed with just two courts.

Diminishing racquet sports wouldn’t have a small impact, either. Wallace said he expects as many as 50 students to try out for the girls’ tennis team alone next year. Even before accounting for boys’ tennis, when you spread those numbers across three schools, it adds up fast.
