A new survey of 2,000 American adults by OnePoll finds nearly three-fourths are just going to chuck any notion of healthy eating for the rest of the year.
What is it about the holiday season that makes it so easy to overindulge?
“We like to look for opportunities where we can rationalize our choices,” said LSU Health New Orleans Chief of Psychology Dr. Michelle Moore, and the seemingly constant parade of holiday treats that starts around Thanksgiving and continues through New Year’s Day seems like a great opportunity.
“It’s our opportunity to indulge, to finally allow ourselves to have these pleasures that maybe we’ve been putting off at other points of the year,” Dr. Moore said, “and at this point of the year, there are a lot of treats out.”
Dr. Moore says it’s not enough just to say “oh I’ll resolve to do be healthier,” we should also think about what specific actions we will take to do that.
“Part of what’s important to think about, is you may plan to make the change, but how are you actually going to actionably make that change? What actions are you going to take for that change to take effect?” said Moore.
