Rabid raccoon found in Chenango County


Mar. 12—The Chenango County Department of Public Health announced Monday, March 12 that a raccoon located on Tamarac Road in the town of Preston tested positive for rabies.

The raccoon was tested Monday by the state Wadsworth Laboratory.

Residents and visitors in the area are advised to not pick up or handle any stray or wild animal and contact the Chenango County Sheriff or county health department to report animals which are behaving strangely or aggressively.

If someone is bitten or scratched by any animal, wash and rinse the wound thoroughly for several minutes, apply a disinfectant and seek medical attention immediately. Report the bite or scratch to a health care provider or the Chenango County Health Department at 607-337-1673.
