Redding Rancheria dieticians share Super Bowl Sunday healthy eating tips

It’s almost Super Bowl Sunday, and what would the occasion be without some delicious food to snack on while you watch the big game?

Some of the most popular foods for Super Bowl parties are buffalo wings, nachos or burgers. Besides being tasty, these meals can also be healthy. Dietitians from the Redding Rancheria Tribal Health Center say you can bake, rather than fry, wings to reduce saturated fat intake.

They also said you can use yogurt while making your own sauce for a healthier ingredients list. Or, you can add a bit of exercise during the day to balance out unhealthy snacking.

“It’s one day of the year. It’s a special celebration,” registered dietitian Andrea Hamilton said. “If we have a lot of these during the year, it can certainly add up. So definitely enjoy, have fun, and keep it balanced, enjoy the social occasion, get some movement in that day.”

Dietitian and Diabetes Educator Blake Lamkin added, “Since Shasta County has a higher incidence of diabetes than the national average, we would suggest pairing those carbohydrate foods with carb-free items so it can help balance those blood sugars.”

The dietitians say moderation is key, and watching your portion sizes is another way to stay healthy. An additional substitute they recommend is cauliflower wings in place of traditional buffalo wings.

Furthermore, Hamilton advised Super Bowl fans to eat a balanced breakfast on game day and keep hydrated with water while cheering on your team.
