Sarah Michelle Gellar has been gracing our television screens for decades, and alongside a successful career, she has become a master of creating easy, healthy meals that fit into her busy lifestyle.

In a recent cooking demonstration with MyFitnessPal, Gellar was whipping up zucchini boats and answering questions about food and meal planning alongside registered dietitian Maya Feller, M.S., RD, CDN.

During the demonstration, Feller asked the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star if she had any go-to high-protein favorites. And for breakfast, Gellar admits that she’s “a toast girl” through and through.

“An avocado toast is a great way to get protein,” she explains. “I love to put an egg on top of my avocado toast. And you can put a great burrata, a little cheese, on top for protein. That is certainly No. 1.”

Avocados, eggs, cheese and even a slice of whole-grain bread can rack up the protein count in your meal. Plus, avocados are a gut-healthy, heart-healthy fruit because they’re loaded with fiber and healthy fats. And when paired with your favorite avocado toast toppings, it can become a part of a satisfying meal. We love topping off avocado toast with salsa or with jammy eggs for a complete and tasty dish.

As for busy mornings, an avocado toast might be difficult to travel with, so Gellar opts for another high-protein favorite.

“A breakfast burrito of any kind is great on-the-go, because you can eat it literally on the go,” she says. They’re also easy to store in your freezer, like these Make-Ahead Breakfast Burritos with Egg, Cheese & Spinach or Vegan Freezer Breakfast Burritos—which are still a protein powerhouse, thanks to a combination of tofu and black beans.

Her kids’ breakfast favorites look a little different, but Gellar says that they love “pretty much everything.”

“[Breakfast] really is, especially for kids, the most important meal of the day,” she notes. “So we do work very hard to make sure they have a balanced breakfast. And even if we’re in a race, that’s what yogurt and overnight oats and all of that is for, so that you can have it ready to go. It’s amazing; you can just get some fresh fruit, chop it up, put it in a parfait glass with some yogurt, and all of a sudden it looks completely gorgeous and fancy, and it literally is just yogurt out of your fridge.”

Whether it’s a Strawberry & Yogurt Parfait or Lemon-Blueberry Overnight Oats, we completely agree that a parfait or oats can be a dreamy yet nutritious way to start the morning. And with ingredients like Greek yogurt and oats being great sources of protein, these options are proof that you can enjoy a sweet breakfast and still be satisfied until lunch.

Gellar just gave us four healthy, protein-packed breakfast ideas that we’ll be adding to the morning and meal-prep routine as soon as possible. Especially for busy mornings, these ideas are perfect for making ahead or preparing in less than 10 minutes to guarantee a healthy a.m.
