‘We like to do weird s***’: Defending champ spills on bizarre pre-match ritual

Aryna Sabalenka has opened up on her bizarre pre-match routines with her fitness coach, conceding she and her team “like to do weird s***.”

Sabalenka, the defending champion and the No. 2 seed, dispatched Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 6-2 to book a spot in the quarter finals but it was her pre-game antics that seemingly stole the show.

The Belarusian was captured in the corridors working with fitness coach Jason Stacy, but instead of regular exercises, Sabalenka channelled her inner karate kid.

Stacy stood motionless with an object on his head and Sabalenka showed off her remarkable flexibility to kick it clean off of Stacy and onto the floor.

But that wasn’t the only rogue element of Sabalenka’s preparation.

Stacy, who now seems to cop the short end of the stick a remarkable amount, has his head signed by Sabalenka.

When quizzed about the act, Sabalenka had the crowd in stitches and revealed it’s something that started in Melbourne.

“We just like to do weird s*** guys, sorry,” Sabalenka said.

“I just did it (signed Stacy’s head) before the first match and after I won the first match, I just told Jason, my fitness coach, I told him, ‘Well, I guess it’s a routine right now.’

“And he’s not happy with that, but he understands everything.”

So, will it become a superstition for Sabalenka?

“I mean, I think so, yes,” the defending champ replied.

Sabalenka now awaits the winner of the fourth round encounter between 16-year-old sensation Mirra Andreeva and No. 9 seed Barbora Krejčíková in the quarter finals.

If Sabalenka emerges victorious from that clash, she could then face No. 4 seed Coco Gauff in the semi final.
